My favorite character from the Canterbury tales is the Reeve. Although the Reeve is an antagonist with a fraudulent personality, he is one of the more complex characters. The Reeve is a character that is clever and deceitful, traits that often lead to plot changes. He keeps an image of honesty and loyalty while, in truth, stealing from his master. This duality in a character is obviously a trait that, in subtle ways, builds the plot’s foundations. He is the villain in a story that you come to love and appreciate, even if he is a terrible person.
The Reeve is also a character that has been passed down through generation in to the modern world. Since his type of character has the complexity of a human while being a villain, it is used in many types of entertainment. Unlike the usual villain with only “evil” in him (ex: The Joker), the Reeve displays human emotions that are relatable. This flexible characteristic can be formed to make important plot twists and changes. An example of a “Reeve” type character is Lord Petyr Baelish or "Littlefinger" from the series, A Song of Fire and Ice.
